Caroline Gleason’s 1914 report on the power laundries of Portland is a one of the most detailed sources available for understanding the nature of work in a power laundries during the early 20th century. Its findings were crucial in moving the legislature to enact the the Industrial Welfare Commission Order No. 13 in 1916, which further restricted women’s work hours, and raised the minimum wage for women.
